Catan 6th edition vs 5th edition: every change that matters at the table
The 6th edition of Catan (2025) keeps the game’s rules almost the same. It adds new art, card trays and slightly bigger roads, prints the harbors on the frame, makes the 5–6 player colour purple, and replaces the Special Build phase with a paired-player rule. Cities & Knights swaps flip charts for boards. Old and new editions can be played together.
The changes at a glance
The 6th edition came out in 2025 for the game’s 30th anniversary. Most changes are to the pieces and the rulebook. One rule change matters, and it only applies with 5 or 6 players.

The paired-player rule for 5 and 6 players
This is the rule change worth learning. In the 5th edition, after each turn every other player got a Special Build phase. With six people that meant a long pause after every single turn.
In the 6th edition, one other player is paired with the player whose turn it is. That second player takes an action phase: they may trade with the bank, build and play one development card, but they may not trade with other players. Reviewers at CGMagazine found it speeds up the slow early game of 5–6 player Catan and gives a player who is behind a way back in.
Hearthsea already plays 5 and 6 player games this way: the player three seats to the left of whoever just finished takes the paired action phase, and the game shows whose phase it is.
Harbors, tiles and the board
The base game’s nine harbors are now printed on the sea frame, so they sit in fixed places. If your group liked moving harbors around for a variable setup, the port tokens are now in Seafarers. Players on r/Catan noticed: “Port positions were adjustable until the latest edition.”
The terrain hexes, number discs and robber work as before. The art is new across every hex and card, and the box has labelled spaces for every piece.
Seafarers and Cities & Knights in the 6th edition
Seafarers now carries the port tokens and adds tiles for the Wonders of Catan scenario. After selling out, its 6th edition stock was due back in May 2026.
Cities & Knights replaces the three flip charts with city-improvement boards and turns the defender cards into tokens. The rules of the barbarians, knights and progress cards are the same. Its shop page says it needs the 6th edition base game.
Explorers & Pirates 5–6 now has every terrain piece as its own hex.
Can you mix 5th and 6th edition pieces?
Yes, with one catch. catan.com says the editions can be used together, but some combinations have different card backs, so a mixed deck gives away which card is which. Card sleeves fix it, and CATAN Studio sells replacement cards in the new art. The purple 5–6 colour and the larger roads look different next to old pieces but play the same.
A Reddit thread from June 2026 is a common case: someone bought the 6th edition 5–6 Cities & Knights pack for a 5th edition base game and found the card backs didn’t match.
Should you buy the 6th edition?
- You don’t own Catan yet: buy the 6th edition. It is the one in shops, and expansions are being reprinted for it.
- You own the 5th and play with 3–4: keep it. The rules at your table don’t change.
- You play with 5–6 every week: the paired-player rule is worth trying, and you can play it with your old box, since it is a rule and not a piece.
- You want to try an expansion before buying it: play Seafarers or Cities & Knights free online first.
